These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your use of outsideyears.com, including its articles, calculators, checklists and other tools (together, the “Site”), operated by Outside Years (“we”, “us”). By using the Site, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.
1. General information only
Everything on the Site is general information for adults planning outdoor activities with children. It is not medical, health, safety, legal or other professional advice, and it does not create any professional or advisory relationship between you and us. Our content is research-based: we rely on manufacturer specifications, published safety standards, public health guidance and verified owner feedback. We do not claim to have tested products unless we say so explicitly. Read our Safety Disclaimer for more.
2. Calculators and interactive tools
Our tools produce general starting points from the information you enter and from simplified rules we describe on each tool’s page. Results may be incomplete or wrong for your situation. They cannot account for your child’s health, development, behavior, the exact conditions where you are, or the gear you use. You are solely responsible for deciding how to dress, equip and supervise your child, for watching your child during any activity, and for following the instructions, sizing, weight limits and age guidance of every product you use. Before you can see some results, you may be asked to confirm that you understand these limits; that confirmation forms part of these Terms.
3. Outdoor activities involve risk
Hiking, camping, snow play and other outdoor activities carry inherent risks, including injury, illness, exposure to cold or heat, and death. Weather, terrain, wildlife, water and equipment can change or fail without warning. You choose whether, when, where and how to take part in any activity, and you voluntarily assume all risks of those activities for yourself and for any child in your care. Check official weather alerts and local conditions, follow park and land manager rules, and seek help from emergency services (911 in the United States) whenever you believe someone may be in danger.
4. No warranties
The Site and all content and tools are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, completeness, timeliness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. Product details, prices, availability, ratings and recall status can change after we publish. We do not warrant that the Site will be uninterrupted, secure or error-free.
5. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Outside Years and its owners, operators, contributors and service providers will not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary or punitive damages, or for any injury, illness, loss or damage of any kind, arising out of or related to your use of, or reliance on, the Site, its content or its tools, or any product or activity mentioned on it, whether based on contract, tort (including negligence), strict liability or any other theory, even if we were advised of the possibility of such damages. Where liability cannot be excluded, our total liability is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us to use the Site (which is normally zero) or USD 50. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of these may not apply to you; in that case they apply to the fullest extent allowed.
6. Indemnification
To the extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Outside Years and its owners, operators and contributors from any claims, losses, liabilities and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your use of the Site or tools, your activities, or your violation of these Terms.
7. Products, affiliate links and third-party sites
The Site contains links to third-party websites, including Amazon. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you (see our Affiliate Disclosure). We do not manufacture, sell, inspect or warrant any product, and we are not responsible for third-party websites, products, listings, sellers or their content. Any purchase is between you and the seller. Always check the current listing, the manufacturer’s instructions and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall database (cpsc.gov) before buying or using a product for a child.
8. Who the Site is for
The Site is intended for adults. It is not directed to children, and children under 13 should not submit any information to us. If you share a tool result or printout, these Terms and our Safety Disclaimer continue to apply to its use.
9. Email sign-ups
If you give us your email address, for example to unlock a printable tool result, you confirm it is your own address and that you are an adult. How we handle it is described in our Privacy Policy. You can unsubscribe or ask us to delete it at any time.
10. Intellectual property and acceptable use
Site content, tools and design belong to Outside Years or its licensors. You may print or save tool results and articles for personal, non-commercial use. You may not copy, republish, scrape or resell Site content or tools, or use the Site in a way that harms it or other users.
11. Changes, severability and contact
We may update these Terms at any time by posting a new version on this page; the date at the top shows the latest version, and continued use of the Site means you accept the updated Terms.
